Modern Technology Essay

Information technology is playing an increasingly important role in the work and personal lives of citizens. Computers, communications, digital information, software – the constituents of the information age – are everywhere. There is though, a considerable number of people that are really concerned about the changes that modern technology implies, stating that it embodies potential risks to social values, freedoms, and relationships and this is what Sherri Turkle also states in her Forbes magazine article ‘Can You Hear Me Now? . I must agree with Turkle’s point of view that technology, along with all the positive aspects it brought into people’s lives, it also brought loneliness and sameness of lifestyle because of this abusive way people got to use technology nowadays. But as opposed to Turkle’s and millions of other people’s fearful thinking that mankind is developing too intimate relationships with machinery; I would say that this can be absolutely controllable. While it is true that the future of technology is only limited by our imagination, people have to learn that no matter how developed technology might get, the basics of a better life are self-esteem, respect for the others and willingness to self-educate and build up a strong character. According to Dictionnary. com,’ technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science’. Commonly, technology can be defined as the science applied to practical purposes. It can be argued that modern technology makes life easier and more dignified for most of people. The first and the major advantage is that medical science is very progressive and vastly available. Without the needed technology a lot of people would struggle with their health. In addition it saves many innocent lives. The point is to spread it and reach with medicine help to the poor nations of the Third World. Secondly, the advanced technology improves industry by making it more effective and, what is vital today, safer for environment. Moreover when we look at TV, personal computer, mobile phone or internet for instance, it is quite obvious that all these inventions have been made in the last 20 years. Thus the speed of improvement is huge and unpredictable. We can get the fastest ways of communication through modern technology which ties humanity together like a nervous system ties the parts of an organism together. Today we are connected with every other human being on the planet in a way people never have been before this leading to globalization through diversity, a very powerful current which is really to consider nowadays. On the minus side there is weaponry which is the inseparable issue of the new technologies. Hence the main problem is the proper use of this knowledge. Nevertheless, weapon engineering propels and provides a huge advance. Also, the industry despite highly developed machinery pollutes the globe. On the other hand while many people live in horrible conditions and famine governments spend a lot of money on developing weapon industry. Is it the right way? Modern technology should prevent social disproportions and not add up even more. Technology entered our lives over a relatively brief period of time with little warning and essentially no preparation. Many who currently use information technology have only a limited understanding of the tools they use and a probably correct belief that they are underutilizing them. This is why most of the people pay more attention first to their interlocutors coming through the modern gadgetry considered a more elevated audience; the ‘real’ ones have come to fill just a second position. This is where Turkle’s fair point comes when she describes these people’s feelings – ‘Being put on pause’ this is the impression we get when the one we are engaged with in a conversation answers his cell phone or replies to an e-mail or a text message. Another example of the modern technology taking over the unprepared people is the virtual lives they build and end up becoming addicted on that up to a certain point where it can even become dangerous for themselves and the ones close to them. Millions become someone else every day, lying about their age, gender, occupation or appearance. If you can be anything, you might as well be who you wish you were rather than what limits you in the real life. So if someone decides they like their online persona better, and decides to spend as much time in that persona as possible, living virtually – are they crazy? These games are addictive by design, and a lot of people get sucked into a virtual world existence, at the expense of their real life happiness. And surely a large part of the attraction is this ability to live an alternate, and in many ways, happier existence. But this can get really dangerous when it comes to children and adolescents as they may discover ‘world in the Second Life’ as Turkle puts it in might be much easier and funnier and they can develop serious issues n forming their character and personalities. And the negative effects technology can have on children are numerous: less physical movement, lack of attraction towards reading, no sense of responsibility. With parents buying their children cell phones and expecting them to call as often as possible showing them actually how little they trust them, this only adds up to children’s developing a lack of responsibility and a sense of dependence, as Turkle puts in and I agree. The time of self-reflection at adolescence is taken over by ‘quickly communicating a state over the cell phone or through an instant message and emoticons’ (Turkle) leading to a new dependence in their early emotional lives. Another point that Turkle makes is that technology leaves less or no time at all to sit and reflect of ourselves uninterrupted and I agree with that. Unless we are really strong as to put away or turn off all the technology around us we cannot get a moment with ourselves as all this machinery can be very distracting. Nowadays, when the rapidness of development and research is so impressive, it is easy to think about the advantages of modern technology. It is obvious that we are close on an era where technology is limited only by our imagination. Therefore the most frequently asked question is: Does technology go the right way and will it save or ruin our civilization? I believe that we can just let ourselves carried along with it or we could impose on ourselves in being more aware of the disadvantages also and try to control it.

Integrated Marketing Plan Essay

Executive Summary Background Started in 1960 by James and Tom Monaghan as a small pizza store in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Domino’s Pizza has grown to more than 10,000 corporate and franchised stores in 70 countries. Domino’s Pizza is recognized as the second largest pizza chain in the United States after Pizza Hut, and the largest worldwide.8 Domino’s had global retail sales of over $7.4 billion in 2012, comprised of over $3.5 billion in the U.S. and nearly $3.9 billion internationally. In the third quarter of 2013, Domino’s had global retail sales of nearly $1.8 billion, comprised of $849 million in the U.S. and $935 million internationally. 9 Focus on Technology From April 2011 to April 2012, Domino’s reached an impressive $2 Billion in US digital from its apps on platforms such as Kindle Fire, Android, Windows 8 phone, and iPhone – which now cover nearly 95% of the U.S. smartphone market. Digital sales, which include mobile and computer ordering, now make up 40% of all Domino’s sales, an increase from 30% in 2012. 9 Problem Statement Building on the success of Domino’s product rebranding and technological innovations, the company’s goal is to implement effective strategies that will increase its percentage of sales driven through the company’s mobile apps and online website. Situational Analysis Strengths of the Organization Domino’s Pizza is the second largest pizza chain in the United States and the world leader in pizza delivery, with more than 10,000 corporate and franchised stores in over seventy countries (Corporate). Furthermore, Domino’s Pizza has been the recipient of Pizza Today magazine’s â€Å"Chain of the Year† award three times back to back in 2010 and 2011 (Corporate). Over the years, Domino’s has launched many industry innovations to keep them at the top of the ladder, namely the HeatWave bag, Domino’s Tracker, and the Domino’s Pizza app (Corporate). This company has maintained great name brand  recognition and a strong distribution system (Corporate). Additionally, Domino’s has maintained its status as a socially responsible company by continuing its tenth annual Thanks & Giving Campaign for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Press). Weaknesses of the Organization Despite its many strengths, Domino’s Pizza also has some weaknesses. Domino’s has a history of past indiscretions with some of its employees. In 2009, two Domino’s employees damaged the brand by pulling a prank that showed them violating health code sanitation standards (Clifford, 2009). Moreover in 2010, a North Carolina woman found a racial slur on her Domino’s receipt (ABC, 2010). Domino’s has long since repaired its public image but now it must be extra careful to maintain customer loyalty. Opportunities in the Environment An opportunity for Domino’s pizza is social media exposure. This exposure can generate more attention from the target market as they are the most likely to be represented on social media websites. Threats in the Environment Some threats for Domino’s Pizza include the fact that some of their products, specifically their sandwiches and desserts, may not seem healthy especially to a health-conscious consumer. As of now, economic setbacks such as wage increases have affected Domino’s Pizza because some British employees have been complaining about poor wages (Karphal, 2013). Competitor, and current industry leader Pizza Hut, offers many of the same products as Domino’s. The company must determine the most effective method to set its products above its competitors. Market Analysis The pizza restaurant industry is continuing to rise at a rate of about 1.6% (Barrett, 2012). Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza, and Papa John’s rank first in sales and unit counts among all the different chains (Barrett 2012). The pizza industry is a $40 billion industry that makes up approximately eleven percent of all restaurants in the nation (Franchise, 2013). Ninety-three percent of Americans eat at least one pizza per month in the nation (Franchise, 2013). The trend with Americans now is to move toward take out and fast delivery food options rather than dining out (Franchise, 2013).  Additionally, one of the best benefits of the pizza industry is its customization for consumer preferences and high versatility (Franchise 2013). The biggest pizza franchises, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Papa John’s, and Little Caesars lead in the US pizza industry (Franchise, 2013). However, Pizza Hut leads the pack with a larger percentages of total sales (about 14.68% of all U.S. pizza sales) compared with the rest (Barrett, 2012). Year Ending September 2012 (cite pmq) Consumer Behavior Analysis Domino’s target audience is the age group of consumers 18-49 years old, both males and females. According to the pizza restaurant industry, the core pizza consumer is around the ages of 18 to 44 years old, with 75 percent to 77 percent of this age group being a pizza restaurant consumer (Barrett, 2012). Of this age, nearly half (47%) of people consider an online ordering option important when it comes to making decisions about buying pizza (Barrett, 2012). Moreover, among this percentile are the consumers aged 25-34 (57%) and those with three or more children (55%; Barrett, 2012). Fortunately for Domino’s, its emphasis on new technology has helped to push the introduction of Domino’s ordering apps for iPhone, Android phones, Windows 8, and the Kindle Fire, which now cover nearly 95 percent of the US smartphone market (Corporate). Competitor Analysis Domino’s three main competitors are Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, and Little Caesars. In fact, its biggest competition currently is Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut currently leads the industry with about 15% of the market and its stores account for 11% of all pizzerias in the US (Barrett, 2012). Likewise, Pizza Hut’s product offerings do not differ substantially from Domino’s. It also offers its product at very competitive prices. Papa Johns and Little Caesars’ product offering differ slightly from Domino’s in the sense that they do not offer pastas or sandwiches like Domino’s. Little Caesars is the only pizza restaurant that does not offer the delivery option. Furthermore, even in social media ranking, namely Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, Pizza Hut leads in each category. Information from each of the 4  most popular American pizza brands in respect to their popularity shows the following: As demonstrated in the chart above, Pizza Hut leads the pack with 10.9 million likes, Domino’s takes second place with about 8.8 million likes, Papa John’s is third with about 2.6 million likes, while Little Caesars is fourth with 1.6 million likes. An article entitled â€Å"Top American Pizza Brands in social media† illustrates more in detail the different pizza brands and how consumers view each their respective Facebook pages. With respect with the other social media websites, Instagram and YouTube, here are the results: As you can see here, Pizza Hut again leads in this social media category with 3,213 YouTube subscribers and 19, 753 Instagram followers. Domino’s trails behind Pizza Hut with only 3,179 subscribers and 5,695 followers. Papa Johns was not accessible on these sites so they do not have any representation in the above chart. Lastly, with Twitter, here are the results: Pizza Hut boasts 650,300 followers; Domino’s has 428,049 followers; Papa John’s has 169,296 followers; and Little Caesars has 25, 209 followers. It is important to analyze the findings of each of these pizza company’s social media rankings because the target age group are continuously on these sites to find information about each brand before they make a decision. According to Andrew Merrill, he states that 70% of all consumers research online before making purchases or choosing service providers while 30% of consumers make purchasing decisions based on branding campaigns (Merrill, 2013). It is important to ensure that Domino’s has a significant presence online as it has globally. Target Audience Domino’s target audience is males and females ages 18-49 skewed slightly female with a focus on mothers and heads of household responsible for making the dinner decision for their family. Product Analysis Domino’s Pizza was long recognized for its inferior taste and quality. In a 2010 interview with Gayle King of The Gayle King Show on Oprah Radio, CEO, Patrick Doyle, acknowledged the inferiority of Domino’s taste and quality. Since that time, Domino’s Pizza has made a consorted effort to move the brand and image into a more favorably light. Offering many of the same products as its competitors – pizza, breadsticks, chicken wings, Domino’s Pizza must continue to find new, innovative ways to set itself apart from competitors and drive more consumers back to the Domino’s brand. Marketing Campaign Our creative Domino’s campaign is comprised of three parts, which will span the months of October to December 2014. According to the Domino’s website, its busiest days of service, apart from Superbowl Sunday, fall on Halloween, Thanksgiving Eve, and New Year’s Eve/ Day (Corporate). With this in mind, we will conduct a series of mini campaigns within the larger one in order to achieve a greater awareness of the ease and benefit of ordering online. The three parts of the campaign are as follows: 1) increase online advertisements about the app technology through Facebook and YouTube; 2) create a national pizza game with the primary goal being to drive sales through the app; 3) generate a global competition in which interested contestants must create a short YouTube commercial showing the benefits of ordering with the app technology. The first part of our campaign will help to make the public aware of the benefits of ordering online, whether on the computer or with a phone/iPad/Kindle app. According to a YouTube article, in the US, online video ads when combined with television ads create a 35% rise in brand recall, a 53% increase in message recall and a 31% rise in likeability over television alone (YouTube, 2012). Therefore, we will increase advertisements on all the social media websites more, namely Facebook and YouTube because they require some cost. Facebook ads require $350 for three months of advertising. Facebook allows the user to target the specific audience based on age, sex, interests/hobbies, language, etc. YouTube ads, on the other hand, will be ads placed in the videos. These ads are known as in-video overlay ads (Kim, 2012). These ads play before or during the video and viewers have the option to skip the ad (with no cost to the owner) or to watch the advertisement (with cost to the owner). The cost  of these ads are anywhere from $0.10 to $0.30 each. We expect the first part of this campaign to run for all the three months. The second part of our campaign will involve the creation of an app game within the existing Domino’s app. This game, which will run from October 30th -November 30th, will allow players the ability to win a free pizza if they win the game. The rules of the game are that three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), consumers will have to guess the correct pizza toppings in the correct quantity, crust, and size selected by a different Domino’s executive or employee. If the consumer chooses the correct type of pizza, they will win that pizza for the day or have the option to change the toppings only. In the event that there is more than one winner for the day, each of their names will be placed in a raffle and only one name will be selected for the free pizza prize. Only players who have the Domino’s app will be able to play this game. The third part of our campaign involves a global competition that will involve all the different global Domino’s pizza restaurants. In this part, interested participants will be given the ability to design a creative commercial using the Domino’s app to order a pizza. The video must be 2-5 minutes in length and the participants must like Domino’s Facebook page, follow its Twitter and Instagram page, and subscribe to its YouTube page in order to participate. They must tweet their video to Domino’s main Twitter page. This competition will be open for the first two weeks in December. After that time, each video will be assessed according to creativity, length, and content. The winner will be announced in the third week of December. The winner of the global competition will win the ultimate prize of having Domino’s cater to their next party or event. This will go hand in hand with two of the biggest days in Domino’s busiest selling days. Domino’s will provide its pizza, sides, drinks, and desserts to the winner. The number of pizzas will be limited to 10 boxes, with the selection of each type of sides and desserts, and 10 2-liter drinks. Marketing Objective: Domino’s Pizza objective for the 2013 marketing campaign is to increase mobile app sales by 7%. This will be achieved through commercial advertisement and social media interaction which will make the customer aware that no matter the consumers’ location, they are able to order lunch or dinner in less than a minute. Another objective is to increase the quantity of loyal customers by 5%. In 2009, Dominos received a bundle of feedback from their customers that the pizza was not authentic or fresh and tasted disgusting. The most common complaint was that â€Å"the pizza crust taste like cardboard† (Fera 2013). This objective could easily be achieved mainly through commercial advertisement or special offers from local stores. Marketing Strategies: Domino’s Pizza will use tradition and nontraditional media to attract new and old customers encouraging them to try our new and improved products. For the convenience of the customer we encourage them to order Dominos products mainly through their website and mobile app. In order to increase sales we need to aggressively advertise through the company’s website, social media and television commercials. A. Our strategy to market our mobile app is to first make it known to the customers that we developed an app on any smartphone device for free. By making customers aware of this mobile app, it could increase Dominos product sales. The company needs to innovate a creative commercial showing how easy it is to download and utilize their mobile app. Once Dominos feel comfortable that they reached enough of their target customers, the company can then offer hot deals for the customer if they order pizza and other products through the mobile app only. Even if the customer prefer s to order on Dominos website, the mobile app allows the customer to keep track of when the order should hit the front door of their house no matter where they are located. The quicker a customer can order lunch or dinner, the faster the order is delivered to the customer. The Dominos mobile app is built for that particular customer who is always on the go and needs to place a quick order with the ability to check the process of the placed order anywhere. B. In order for Dominos to increase the quantity of loyal customers by 5%, they need to aggressively explain to consumer that they have redeveloped and revamped their products to the satisfaction of their customers wants for quality pizza. This could be expressed though commercial advertisement and social media. Commercial advertisement will express to the customers that Dominos listened to the feedback of previous customers and have currently re-innovated their pizza product to consumers’ satisfaction. But the fallback of their refurbished  product is that most of their old customer are unaware of their changes which led them to other pizza companies. With that said, local Domino stores should offer a pizza launch for families in the neighborhood to try one of their favorite 1-topping medium size pizza. This allows the customer to taste the quality of Dominos refurbished pizza products. Building brand loyalty and changing the customers’ perspective of their products is very important to increasing sales. Dominos website, www.pizzaturnaround.com, is a great way for potential or old customers to review how much Dominos redeveloped their pizza product basically from scratch (Bodnar 2010). Many people were misguided by what other customers said years ago causing future customer discouragement from ordering Domino’s Pizza. C. As for our media objective, we strategize that we can have a nationwide contest which will allow consumers to make a commercial on how they eat the ir pizza. Unique videos will have the chance to be selected and run on Domino’s profile page. This can be implemented through YouTube, Vine, and Instagram. Social media is an important tool for Dominos to offer hot deals without the customer going to the company’s website. They can easily check current events and coupon deal that Dominos promote on a daily basis. Customers the utilize social media could encourage fellow followers on their network to purchase Domino’s Pizza products in order to experience the same great taste that they enjoy. Evaluation The media marketing plan proposed will be effective because consumer trends are being followed and aggressive advertisement are being carefully placed in the media targeting young adults and families frequently. To determine whether or not our media plan will work, each strategy must be implemented carefully and effectively to ensure that Dominos objectives are met. As we continue to implement our marketing and media strategy, we will analyze the customers’ interaction with the Dominos website and mobile app. This analysis will determine the overall performance of our media plan displaying if we need to revamp our plan or continue with the plan at hand. Implementing this media plan will help ensure Domino’s Pizza that they will remain the leader in pizza delivery while increasing sales. Budget Domino’s Pizza creative campaign based on fast delivery with the use of the Dominos website and mobile app. The campaign budget of $250,000 includes advertisement expenditures on: billboard, transit, contingency fund, social media, promotional items and search engine optimization. Billboard advertisement will consist of 8% of the budget because it seems more logic to focus on other advertisement tools even though billboards are great in certain areas. As for Maryland, displaying your business on a billboard is not the most effective advertisement tool since people have trouble viewing the billboard while driving. The amount for this medium is $20,000. For transit advertisement we consider this tool to be 12% of the budget coming up $30,000. Many working mother and young adults continuously take public transportation. This will be a great way for Dominos to spread their brand name throughout the nation. Social media is the most important part of the budget at 32% because it is the most convenient for communication between Dominos and the public. This part of the budget will equal $80,000. Every plan needs a backup plan just in case the initial strategy doesn’t execute the goals we need in order to successfully implement our media plan. The contingency fund for our Dominos media campaign will be 14% at $35,000. Search engine optimization is also a great way for Dominos to expand their brand name when people are searching other topics on the net. This medium would be worth 18% of the budget at the amount of $45,000. And last but not least the promotional item of the budget will equal $40,000 for 16% of the budget. This concludes the budget for our media campaign. Works Cited 1. Bodnar, Kipp. (2010). B2B Social Media Lessons from Domino’s â€Å"Pizza Turnaround† Campaign†. Strain and squeeze the banana peel with pandan. Put the crushed candles into casserole and until it melts. Combine the melted candles and the extract of banana peel with pandan. Wait until it forms like a wax. Chapter II: Related  Literature Studies BANANA  is the  common name  for a fruit and also the  herbaceous  plants of the  genusMusa  which produce the commonly eaten fruit. They are native to the tropical region of  Southeast Asia  and  Australia. Today, they are cultivated throughout the  tropics. Banana plants are of the  family  Musaceae. They are cultivated primarily for their fruit, and to a lesser extent for the production of fiber and as ornamental plants. As the bananas are mainly tall, upright, and fairly sturdy, they are often mistaken for trees, when the truth is the main or upright stem is called a pseudostem, literally meaning â€Å"fake stem†, which for some species can obtain a height of up to 2–8 m, with  leaves of up to 3. 5 m in length. Each pseudostem would produce a bunch of yellow, green, or even red bananas before dying and being replaced by another pseudostem. Banana leaves are widely used as plates and for lining cooking pits and for wrapping food for cooking or storage. A section of leaf often serves as an eye-shade. In Latin America, it is a common practice during rains to hold a banana leaf by the petiole, upside-down, over one’s back as an â€Å"umbrella† or â€Å"raincoat†. The leaves of the ‘Fehi’ banana are used for thatching, packing, and cigarette wrappers. Pandan is widely known for the many uses it contributes to us. It is a very beneficial plant that provides many useful things for our day to day life. The aroma of the  pandan leaves  is unique very hard to describe. It is somewhat nutty, similar to fresh hay which is eventually pleasant. You can also found this kind of aroma in some varieties of rice that are grown in South East Asian countries. A good example to that is the Thai Jasmin Rice. The distinct development of the aroma of the said leaves is best when it is wilting because the freshly picked pandan leaf is eventually odourless. But if you dry it, it would surely lose the aroma very quickly. On the other hand, the flavour component of the said plant is still unknown. Some experts suggested that the aroma comes from a volatile product of oxidation degragation of a yellow carotenoid pigment fround on the plant and forms only when the plant is withered. In that aspect, the pandan leaves is also similar to rose and saffron which also has a caratenoid derived aroma compound that makes it smell extra good. Pandan leaves  are a very famous plant in some Asian countries. It contributes a lot in many different ways but most distinctly to enhance the aroma of rice and other rice products, maybe because Pandan leaves has a hay-like odour. There is also other usage of pandan leaves that would contribute a lot to us. The following common usages of  Pandan Leaves  are as follows. The most common use of pandan leaves, especially people in Asia, to add a subtle flavour of pandan in your food. It contributes a very good smell when added in the top of the rice so that, it will produce a good smell. It is very useful since it can add appetite to anyone who will eat the cooked rice. People in Asian countries tend to enjoy eating that kind of rice. It is also best if you add coconut milk together with pandan leaves in the cooked rice. That will result to a very special taste you could ever imagine. You could not compare its taste to anything. It is simply delicious that you can forget it comes from pandan leaves. Another useful thing you can produce through pandan leaves is that you can create a paste out of it. This kind of paste can be use in several kinds of recipes. You just simply cut the leaves, 1 inch each leaves, then place it in a pot at the stove. Add a cup of water to it and place as many leaves as long as it fits the pot. Boil the said mixture. Wait until the leaves are soft. Allow some water to evaporate. Lastly, process the water and the in a food processor to create a paste. By following those simple steps, you will be able to create something useful out of pandan leaves. Floor wax can be made out of used candle by heating the used candles till they melt completely, then we add a little kerosene to the melted candles. This is an excellent polish especially for wooden floors as they keep termites away. Organic matter is the peel’s principal constituent. Proteins account for 0. percent by weight of the peel, lipids are 1. 7 percent, carbohydrates are 59. 1 percent and crude fiber is 31. 7 percent. This composition makes the peel a good animal feedstock. Wood flooring brings an old time, rustic elegance to your home that lasts a life time. Unfortunately, many home owners do not know the correct way to clean and care for their wood floors. A common method for cleaning wood floors is with the use of oil soap. Many wood flooring manufacturers state that using oil soap on your flooring will void the warranty. Oil soap is essentially vegetable oil and vegetable oil leaves a residue behind. For centuries, people have used kerosene to clean their wood flooring. Kerosene will not only keep your floors from looking dull, but it removes heal marks, crayon and lipsticks without causing harm to your floors Chapter III: Methods of Research and Procedure Procedures: All the materials should be prepared. Slice the Banana and Pandan. Crush the candles. Use a casserole to boil a 2cups of water. Boil the pandan within 30minutes. Put the banana peel together with the pandan. Put a 1/2cup of kerosene and 3 teaspoon of cooking oil and dye. Observe the color to know if the extract of the Banana Peel change. Strain and squeeze the banana peel with pandan. 10. Put the crushed candles into casserole and until it melts. Combine the melted candles and the extract of banana peel with pandan. Wait until it form like a wax. Chapter  IV: Analysis Presentation and Interpretation of Data SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE PART I SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE PART II Chapter  V: Summary, Conclusion Recommendation CONCLUSION Banana peel has its many uses. One of these is as an alternative resource in making floorwax. It contains good fiber that makes the wax smoother and shiner. It offers the same quality just like the other common floorwax can offer. Moreover, it is cheaper and has a nicer fragrance than the former. Recommendation: The researcher would highly recommended that we could use banana floor wax instead of busy commercial floor wax in the market because it is cheaper and fits in our budget.   Bibliography http://www. hort. purdue. edu/newcrop/morton/banana. html#Other%20Uses http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Banana Components of a Banana Peel | eHow. com http://www. ehow. com/info_10033568_components-banana-peel. html#ixzz2KKGbgW6A How to Clean Wood Floors With Kerosene | eHow. com http://www. ehow. com/how_6153768_clean-wood-floors-kerosene. html#ixzz2KKVytGce Banana Peel as an Alternative Floor Wax Research paper TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER I: The problem and its settings Statement of the problem Importance and Significance of the study Definition of terms Scope and Delimitation of study Conceptual Framework CHAPTER II: Related Literature Studies CHAPTER III: Methods of Research and Procedure CHAPTER IV: Analysis Presentation and Interpretation of Data CHAPTER V: Summary, Conclusion Recommendation CHAPTER VI:  Bibliography Chapter I: The problem and its setting The Statement of the problem: a) Can banana be an alternative source in making a floor wax? b) Can Pandan leaves helps to lessen the original odor of a particular products? FACEBOOK AND ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

FACEBOOK AND ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS - Essay Example However, social media sites such as face book have redefined communication among romantically involved persons by encouraging the parties to reveal as much information as possible regarding these relationships. The trend of revealing romantically sensitive information has brought with it some advantages and disadvantages, but in most cases, this trend has led to break up of many promising relationships and broken marriages. This paper will look at the negative effects that exposing romantic relationships in face book has on those relationships. According to Flynn (nd), one of the ways that face book ruins relationships is through the amount of time that one spends in face book and the jealousy that comes with it. An online survey in face book that was conducted among people who were in a relationship asked questions regarding face book and feeling of jealousy such as if they got jealous when their partners added people of the opposite sex. Although the levels of jealousy that an indi vidual feels is thought to be genetic, when an individual is exposed to information regarding his or her romantic partner’s friends and social interactions in face book leads to an environment that leads to jealousy (Marshall, Bejanyan, Di Castro & Lee, 2012). Large amounts of time spent on face book has been positively associated with negative relationships experiences in face book since an individual may be exposed to information about his or her partner that he/she would not have got were it not for face book. This would therefore lead him to increase surveillance on his spouse on face book, which in turn leads him to increase the time he spends on face book creating a vicious cycle of face book use. From another angle, jealousy may come from other people who are not happy with the relationship, this in turn may act as an incentive for the jealous people to look for ways and means by which they can destroy the relationships, though this may not be direct, this serves to de stroy the romantic relationship (Tokunaga, 2011). The information that is discovered in face book, led to individuals creating events and situations that may have or may not have happened. This is confirmed by Muise et al (2009) when he conducted a study on face book users who were in relationships. This study found out that the participants reported feeling that face book setting formed feelings of jealousy and increased fears about the value of relationships that they had. The study found out that the participants who had never before felt any form of jealousy towards their romantic partners started developing feelings of jealousy after surveying them on face book while those who had previous feelings of jealousy got their feelings intensified after looking at their partners face book activity. This can be attributed to the revealing of otherwise unknown information about the spouses via face book. Spending too much time on the internet especially the social sites makes an individ ual to lose touch with reality, which creates distraction from the things that matter. People who spend a lot of time in face book have a tendency to have poor communications skills as they prefer to spend most of their time alone socializing with people in these social sites, this creates a strain in the romantic relationship which may in turn lead to breakdown of the relationship. Face book and other social platform have equally served as platforms through which romantic partners interact. However,

What Is An Entrepreneurship All about, How to Be a Leader Assignment

What Is An Entrepreneurship All about, How to Be a Leader - Assignment Example Entrepreneurial implies that an individual must display the ideal knowledge to operate a company. In my case, I have displayed a tendency to make strategic decision. For instance, I use my time to study efficiently, which involves subdividing my time in order to understand how to allocate equal time to the subjects I took. During my time in the university, I did some community work managing the community center. During my time as an operations manager, I managed to ensure my subordinates worked efficiently, which meant subdividing the workload between the subordinates. Another important factor during my time in the community center was being prompt to work in order to create a work schedule which would ensure all the work for the day was accomplished. In some cases, I had to pitch in on the tasks in order to cover for workers who may were unwell to report for work (Kleiman, 2010). Such factors were important in order to ensure that the community center operated efficiently; hence, de monstrating my entrepreneurial qualities. In terms of being entrepreneurial, I will be able to make decisions promptly, which will not put the company in jeopardy. I am an efficient worker, which ensures that I am very reliable in relation to accomplishing tasks quickly and with the expected quality and high standard of the company (Kotter, 2002). I can operate independently without the need for supervision, which is a quality that entrepreneurs possess. This means that I can work independently, but not in a manner that suggests I cannot work in a team. Another aspect of my character is my ability to coordinate individuals.

The Reasons for War in 1898 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Reasons for War in 1898 - Essay Example The vision of the United States as an Asian power originated in the post colonial period. The U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838 described three great island nations in the Pacific. These ports, Pago Pago, Manilla, and Pearl Harbor initiated the vision of America's quest for a presence in the Pacific. In 1878 the United States acquired a naval base in Pago Pago through an agreement with Great Britain and Germany, and by the end of 1898 the U.S. government controlled all the above mentioned harbors.2Frederick Jackson Turner‘s analysis that liberty and individualism had depended on the existence of a moving frontier into contiguous land. Turner believed that an ever-expanding frontier was necessary for the growth of the nation. Stromberg contends that, "With the disappearance of the frontier in the 1890s, a substitute frontier had become necessary to preserve the American way of life"3. Foreign markets became the frontier that had been exhausted on the mainland. Using Turner's arg uments, proponents advocated looking beyond our shores for new frontiers and expanding markets. The vehicle to make large scale saltwater imperialism possible began with the publication of Alfred Thayer Mahan's 1890 book "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783". Mahan proposed the theory that great nations rode upon great naval power. As Mahan laid out in his book, "The motive, if any there be, which will give the United States a navy, is probably now quickening in the Central American Isthmus. Let us hope it will not come to the birth too late"4. Mahan's book was greeted with great acceptance and resulted in an appropriations bill to build a strong naval fleet in the 1890s. The naval appropriations act of 1890 was a strong endorsement of Mahan's philosophy and changed our naval approach from defensive to offensive. According to Musicant, "The battleships were a giant stride, as Tracy and his allies frankly admitted, toward creating a fighting fleet to seize command offen sively of the open sea and destroy the enemy in blue water"5. The new naval strategy would enable the coming decade to foment the beginnings of war and enable the interested factions to make a case for imperial expansion. By 1898, Cuba was central to our nation's attention and was the jumping off point to the war with Spain. Cuban rebels had been fighting for independence from Spain for 30 years. The main impetus for the rebellion was the unacceptable conditions in Cuba. In 1868, Cuban Nationalists fought a ten-year war that left the insurgents exhausted. Spain promised reforms, but most were never materialized and in 1895 the rebels staged a more concentrated effort for Cuban independence. The war from 1895-1898 would devastate Cuba, its economy, and its people. As Offner describes the devastation, "They sought to turn Cuba into an economic desert, thereby making the island unprofitable and convincing Spain to leave. Insurgents burned sugar cane fields and mills and destroyed railroads, telegraph lines, and other property"6. These atrocities would capture the attention

The Merits of Privatization Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Merits of Privatization - Research Paper Example tes, transcontinental railroad constructed by public and private partnerships during the nineteenth century is one of the earliest examples of privatization in the US. The transcontinental public private partnership is always cited as an example by the people who support privatization. Privatization not only brings efficiency but it also helps in curtailing costs and reduces bureaucracy. (Loulakis, 2003) The recent financial downturn and government bailouts have severely affected the American economy. With the government deficits and costs of borrowing increasing day by day, many leading economists have advocated privatization of government functions which would bring budgetary discipline and would reduce government’s financial burden. Though the consumers are greatly benefited by the reduction in the costs of goods and services due to privatization, the only point which may negatively affect the citizens is accountability. Citizens do not have any control over private companies and cannot punish them, like they can punish the government by not voting for them in state or central elections. Another point of concern with privatization is that private firms operate with only one motive that is profitability, which is secondary in government owned and operated firms. Though, privatization has greatly improved product quality and cost, there are certain services which should not be privatized. Sectors like defense, law enforcement, education and basic healthcare should always be under State control. The future of the country depends a lot on the above mentioned sectors and therefore, the motive of cost cutting, profitability and competition should not come into consideration. However, certain functions like sourcing of certain products can be outsourced. Another reason why these sectors should be under State control is because in case of any adverse events the government must have the capacity and the control to handle the situation quickly and

Crime Prevention Essay Example for Free

Crime Prevention Essay Abstract Crime prevention has become a major issue in our Nation. In our text we have learned that in the early 1990’s President Bill Clinton had passed a bill that hired 100,000 police officers as a result of the Violent Crime Control Act (Worrall, 2008). The hiring of all the police officers looked as if was going to make a huge impact across the nation. With the rate of crime going up across the world crime prevention is really needed. Communities and police officers need to come together to help preserve our neighborhoods. This is the best form of crime prevention. In this paper I am going to discuss the relationship of crime prevention to the Criminal Justice System. I am also going to give my definition of what is crime prevention. I will also discuss two or more institutions through which crime prevention programs and practices are delivered and try to give some examples. Crime Prevention Crime prevention can be defined in several ways. My definition of crime prevention is stopping crime and protecting our neighborhoods. If the community and the police work together they can reduce crime over time drastically. Crime is increasing in neighborhoods, so, crime prevention should increase as well. The relationship of crime prevention to the Criminal Justice System has several purposes. Crime prevention has the main purpose of protecting the community and the people that live in them. â€Å"Crime prevention and the Criminal Justice System have two main goals: to lessen the human and material cost and its impact on socioeconomics development and to formulate international standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice and promote their observance (Encyclopedia of the Nations, 2013).† In the relationship of crime prevention to the Criminal Justice System the police have several objectives. The police objectives are to prevent and control conduct threatening the life or property including serious crimes. Police also help and protect victims who have been physically abused (Plant and Scott, 2009). They also stop and arrest drunken drivers which help and protect the community. When police make drug bust in which the community helps with tips or make arrest on repeat offenders this type of crime prevention is key in the relationship with the Criminal Justice System. Police are used as mediators and negotiators to resolve domestic disturbances or hostage situations (Plant and Scott, 2009). Police are also trying to find ways to protect the youth of today from following in the same footsteps as the criminals that they deal with on a day to day basis. Police are trying to do everything that they can to stop trafficking of persons and drugs throughout our nation and help keep our youth stay out of the criminal justice system. Crime prevention and the Criminal Justice System go hand in hand with the reduction of crime. There are many institutions through which crime prevention programs and practices are delivered. Most of the programs are built around habitual offenders and youths from the 5 to 18 years of age. One program that they have for repeat offenders is the Circle of Support and Accountability (COSA). This program targets young to adult males that have been tried and convicted of a sexual crime, did not get early release, and are at serious risk of reoffending (National Crime Prevention Centre, 2008). COSA has up to seven but no less than four volunteers that help the offenders reengage back to a normal life in their community. The volunteers also hold the offenders accountable for their actions. COSA’s main goals are to help the offenders through their difficulties and emergencies, hold them accountable for their behavior and attitudes, to be advocates for treatment with the providers, comm unity groups, the police agencies and any other professionals in the community, mediate with the community to answer their concerns, and to help them celebrate their success of treatment and their anniversaries (National Crime Prevention Centre, 2008). Another program that is used as a crime prevention program is the Boy and Girls Clubs of America. This program targets young children and teens from five years of age to eighteen. This also targets kids in high risk and drug infested communities. The Boys and Girls Club gives kids in the community a safe place to go after school and in the summer. This organization keeps kids and teens out of trouble. Teens that have dropped out of school are given an opportunity to get their GED through programs provided by the Boys and Girls Club (National Crime Prevention Centre, 2008). The Boys and Girls Club gives children a place to go when their parents are working late and gives parents a sense of relief because they know that their child is in a safe environment. The Boys and Girls Club provides kids with meals and snacks, a place to do their homework, a place to play sports, and a place to feel safe (National Crime Prevention Centre, 2008). The Clubs offer programming in four main areas. The areas are leadership; growth and empowerment, physical activity; health and safety, learning and career development, and community services. It also operates under five values. The values are inclusion and opportunities, respect and belonging, empowerment, collaboration, and speaking out (National Crime Prevention Centre, 2008). As you can see that empowerment is a major part of the Boys and Girls Club. Showing kids that they matter and that they have worth gives the kids a boost in their confidence and self-esteem. These are just two organizations that help and focus on making someone’s life better. There are many more out there that can help in particular fields of rehabilitation and kid safety. Crime prevention and the Criminal Justice System are needed though out our nation. Police are doing all they can to make the communities safe. It is time for the community to help the police and get rid of the â€Å"no snitching po licy.† The youth of today have so many things that can cause them to turn to a life of crime and it is up to parents, police, and other government officials to protect them. There are a large number of organizations that are out there that can help youths, teens, and adults to become better members of society. When a criminal is released back into society they should find one of these organizations to help them get acclimated with the community that they are moving into. The Criminal Justice System and crime prevention goes hand in hand but is not the only way to turn young adults away from crime. The responsibility is the parents to guide and protect the kids from the dangers of the world. The Criminal Justice System is full enough with young men and women, let’s try and stop the number from getting bigger. Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens Essay Example for Free

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens Essay Oliver Twist is a novel written by Charles Dickens. The novel follows an orphan boy named Oliver through many trials and tribulations he must endure. Through this he does have a few kind, compassionate, and stable people to rely on. Two of the most important were Nancy and Rose Maylie. Within this essay I will give a detailed description of both Rose and Nancy and also compare and contrast the two. First I would like to introduce you to Nancy. Nancy is the only female character of Fagin’s group. Being a part of this group Nancy must steal from the rich in order to make money for basic necessities and keep her relationships with the crew. This lifestyle puts he in the criminal social class or otherwise know as the lowest of the low social class. Nancy, much like Oliver, was also an orphan growing up. She acquires no formal education; therefore she can neither read nor write. Even though Nancy was not blessed with the luxury of the basic upbringing, she maintains very impressive street smarts. She displays this when bringing stolen goods to Fagin that are bundled like a baby so it is not witnessed as suspicious. Nancy may have been a criminal but she had a great heart. She had a great relationship with all of Fagin’s boys and cared for all of them. She also cared greatly for her boyfriend Bill Sikes who, in my opinion, did not return this love. Bill was very abusive towards Nancy and seemed to threaten her on a regular basis. When confronted with the question, â€Å"Do you love me Bill?† by Nancy, he did not directly answer and proceeded to ignore the question. In the end it was also Bill who ended up murdering Nancy. Apparently, Bill Sikes thought Nancy telling Mr. Brownlow and Rose where to find Oliver was punishable by death. By following through with the action of â€Å"peaching†, Nancy shows how much she truly cares about Oliver. Another major character in Oliver’s life was Rose Maylie. Rose Maylie was a ward of Mr. Brownlow, therefore also making her an orphan. Mr. Brownlow was an Upper Middle Class man, which made Rose and Upper Middle Class â€Å"Victorian woman.† She, like many others from her social class, was well educated. She even was very talented at playing the piano. Mr. Brownlow’s grandson, Edward, wanted to marry Rose. Rose, seeing that Edward’s thinking was wrong, expressed to him how against the idea she was; something very uncommon for that day in age. Oliver was brought into the home by Mr. Brownlow after Oliver was wrongfully accused of pick pocketing him. While Oliver is changing into clean, more appropriate clothing, Rose notices scars on Oliver’s back due to beatings. From then on Rose feel obligated to protect poor Oliver. She becomes somewhat of a sister figure to him. Throughout the novel Rose protects and defends Oliver. As you can see Nancy and Rose are different in many ways. However, both women do have a few things in common. Rose and Nancy both had very different social classes.

Construction Developments in High Rise Buildings

Construction Developments in High Rise Buildings This paper has provided a broad overview of different historic developments for concrete high-rise buildings. The evolution of concrete skyscrapers from the first reinforced concrete high-rise, the Ingalls Building, which was 15 stories high to modern skyscrapers PETRONAS Towers is discussed. How new innovations in construction technology such as the advances, techniques that are used to improve quality have all contributed to the ease of working with concrete in high-rise construction is also briefly discussed in the paper. Supertall buildings are a relatively recent addition to the history of the cities around the world. Technology of the nineteenth century made their development possible. Steel, concrete and masonry materials have existed for a long time in the history of civilization but not in such a configuration. Masonry is the oldest material. Concrete in its present form is the youngest of these three basic structural materials of construction. Concrete, unlike any other structural building material, allows the architects and engineers to choose not only its mode of production, but its material properties as well. Much of the technological change in concrete construction was in the first half of the 20th century. Advances in formwork, mixing of concrete, techniques for pumping, and types of admixtures to improve quality have all contributed to the ease of working with concrete in high-rise construction. There were main four periods in the development of skyscraper which began around 1808 and ended in 1960s where structures were usually vertical and dominant. During 1970s the international modernism in construction started to rise and this introduced a renewed interest in silhouettes and symbolic potential. The most efficient construction coordination plan for a tall building is one that allows formwork to be reused multiple times. Traditionally, formwork was made of wood but as technology has advanced, the forms have become a combination of wood, steel, aluminum, fiberglass and plastic, to name only a few materials. Each set may be self-supporting with trusses attached to the exterior or may need additional shoring to support it in appropriate locations. New additions to the family of forms include flying-forms, slip forms, and jump forms. The PETRONAS towers are a good example of this latest period. The techniques improved continually till now when pumping of concrete is considered even for small jobs. In recent years, concrete pumping has reached new heights. The builders for the Jin Mao Building in Shanghai, China, boast of pumping high strength concrete as high as 1200 ft (366 m). For such great heights, a high-pressure unit is needed. Great thought must be given to the properties of concrete and how it will react when pressure is applied in a pipe. All these factors demanded innovations in concrete technology. Already a well-argued case between Architects and Engineers is to build a environment with minimal impact on natural environment and to integrate the built environment with ecological systems of the locality. This proposition of the skyscraper as an ecologically- responsive building might well appear to be a conundrum for some.Afterall; Skyscraper is the citys most intensive building-type of enormous size. The council on tall Buildings and Urban habitat in USA defines the skyscraper as a tall building whose built form that by virtue of its height requires its own special engineering systems. Designed by Argentine architects Cà ©sar Pelli and Djay Cerico under the consultancy of Julius Gold, the PETRONAS Towers were completed in 1998 after a seven year build and became the tallest buildings in the world on the date of completion. They were built on the site of Kuala Lumpurs race Because of the depth of the bedrock; the buildings were built on the worlds deepest foundations. The 120-meter foundations were built within 12 months by Bachy Soletanche and required massive amounts of concrete. Its engineering designs on structural framework were contributed by Haitian engineer Domo Obiasse and collegues Aris Battista and Princess D Battista. From this floor rose a 21-metre high retaining wall, with a perimeter length of over 1 kilometer. This concrete shell and the basement area it enclosed required two years of up to 40 workers on site all day and night. The final product is the basement car park offering a total of 5,400 parking bays on five levels beneath the podium wrapping the towers. As an added consideration, two different contractors were chosen for each tower to allow cross-monitoring of construction values and techniques with one coming to the aid of the other should problems arise. The construction of the superstructure commenced in April 1994, after rigorous tests and simulations of wind and structural loads on the design. Due to the nature of the project, being the first super tall structure of its kind in Malaysia and very limited experience with the use of high strength concrete, the contractors were required to demonstrate that the requirements of the project could be successfully achieved prior to actual construction of structural elements. The contractor Samsung-Kukdong-Jasatera joint ventures were to do it. The major engineering and structural design teams were a collection of eminent international companies and consultants including such notables as Cà ©sar Pelli Associates, Hazama Corporation, Adamson Associates Architects, Solà ©tanche Bachy, RSP Architects Planners Engineers, Samsung Engineering Construction, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Syarikat Jasatera Sdn Bhd., and several dozen other major international firms. Legions of support engineers and designers in an array of specific disciplines contributed over the course of the years. The site for PETRONAS Towers is the Golden Triangle. Around it radiates the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysias capital. The jewel of this 100-acre site are the towers. Working within mixed-used development plan by U.S firm of Klages, Carter, Vail and Partners. The design drawings show a complex of buildings growing from an intimate relationship with the site, generating from its core. The concert halls provide an important gathering space. The number of designers, engineers, and building contractor management personnel that took part in the design process is about the same as the number of workers that actually built the towers. About 7,000 construction workers took place in the actual building of the towers, as there was a great concern for the congestion that would occur in the busy Kuala Lumpur city center. 7,000 design workers talking constantly among themselves for five or six years designed the building. It was certainly an impressive conversation. Although much of this talk took place directly between individuals, this project probably would not have been possible before the development of the Internet or sophisticated project and communication management software. Every phase of the process, from the drawings and engineering research down to the daily work orders was accomplished with cutting edge software that was in many cases as technologically innovative as other parts of the project. The high quality of the PETRONAS Towers is the result of the quality of the design team. Although Cà ©sar Pelli was the titular designer and he served as the lead visionary, the design contributors included Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir, businessman T. Ananda Krishnan, senior managers of the PETRONAS company, the Kuala Lumpur City Center planning manager Arlida Ariff, and many high ranking national and local politicians.. The design process itself was as much a marvel as are the physical towers visible today. When construction began the design did not call for the tallest buildings in the world and the entire foundation was moved after excavations had already begun. The parking garage was located up inside the towers in Cà ©sar Pellis first drawings and the powerful Skybridge was absent from the original 1990 Klages Carter Vail Partners plans for the Kuala Lumpur City Center development that first called for two towers. These and many more features of the project changed as the design for the project evolved continuously over the life of the project and the final result is a testament to the efficiency of the whole multi-year design process. The towers feature askybridgebetween the two towers on 41st and 42nd floors, which is the highest 2-story bridge in the world. It is not directly bolted to the main structure, but is instead designed to slide in and out of the towers to prevent it from breaking during high winds. The bridge is 170m (558ft) above the ground and 58m (190ft) long, weighing 750 tons. The same floor is also known as the podium, since visitors desiring to go to higher levels have to change elevators here. The lifts contain a number of safety features. It is possible to evacuatepeople from a lift stuck between floors by manually driving one of the adjacent lifts next to it and opening a panel in the wall..During an evacuation of the buildings, only the shuttle lift is allowed to be used, as there are only doors at levels G/1 and levels 41/42; therefore should there be a fire in the lower half of the building, this enclosed shaft would remain unaffected. Firefighter lifts are also provided in case of emergency The PETRONAS Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world until Taipei 101 was completed in 2004, as measured to the top of their structural components .Spires are considered integral parts of the architectural design of buildings, to which changes would substantially change the appearance and design of the building, whereas antennas may be added or removed without such consequences. The research and knowledge in concrete gained in the first half of the twentieth century benefit technologies today. This paper has provided a broad overview of different historic developments for concrete high-rise buildings. To summarize, the first users of concrete date before 1200 BC and include societies like the Phoenicians, Minoans, and Egyptians, to name only a few. The late 1700s and early 1800s found a renewed discovery of and interest in reinforced concrete as a building structure. Americans and Europeans used it in large warehouses, factory buildings, apartment buildings and homes. New delivery systems, changes in formwork, high-strength concrete and other admixtures were invented which improved concretes strength and workability. Structural systems which go beyond the traditional post-and-beam construction of the Ingalls Building and the introduction of high-strength concrete mixes have together allowed reinforced concrete skyscrapers to grow to heights of the PETRONAS. Little more than a century ago, reinforced concrete was invented. In that short period of time, reinforced concrete has gone from being a very limited material to one of the most versatile building materials available today. The first reinforced concrete buildings were heavy and massive. Valuable floor space was taken up by the massive concrete structural systems. Today, due to our increased knowledge and improved technology, reinforced concrete buildings can be tall, graceful and elegant. Due, in part, to the use of shear walls, innovative structural systems and ultimate strength design, very little usable floor space is occupied by the structure. HSC and lightweight structural concrete allow us to use smaller member sizes and less steel reinforcement. Because of the rapid developments of concrete construction and technology, with every passing year the use of concrete for tall buildings is becoming a constant reality. The mold ability of concrete is a major factor in creating exciting building forms with elegant aesthetic expression. Compared to steel, concrete tall buildings have larger masses and damping ratios that help in minimizing motion perception. A heavier concrete structure also provides better stability against overturning caused by lateral loads. New structural systems including the composite ones that are popular now have allowed concrete high-rises to reach new heights during the last four decades. Although steel will continue to be the structural material of choice for many tall buildings for its strength and ductility, we may expect to see more and more concrete and composite high-rise structures shaping the skylines of major cities of the world in the forthcoming years.

My Writing Essay -- Personal Narrative Writing

My Writing In the past four years, I have written many papers for various classes, enjoying some and others having to choke out words to write down. In this memo I will describe my writing projects and how they made me become a better writer, and how they will continue to help develop me into a becoming a more prosperous writer. What I Really Learned in English 100 Well as a recent pupil of the Great McFadden I want to do all that I can to be on his good side, for he said that if I go one mile to meet him, he will go two miles to meet me, which seems more that fair. As an assignment I am told that I have to write what I learned in English 100 and how that it prepared me for English 200. Well since honesty is the best way of life, in my opinion, then I will be honest about what I learned in English 100. I didn’t learn very much at all in English 100, the teacher I had didn’t teach very well, and because of that, we all were on msn the whole time as he read from a book. Like most English classes we turned in our ruff drafts and they were returned to us with things we had to fix in order to receive a better grade. I also learned how to write a research paper that amounted to twelve pages, and many hours of hard dedicated work. Learning is an on going process, and a process of which one can never really stop learning. I would have to say I have an eagerness to learn. I usually learn fast and remember what it is that I was taught. I think it is very important in today’s society that a person should learn all that they can about how things work and how things are done for their own personal behalf. Having said that, I would also like to say that I like to learn what I am interested in, learning comes more natu... ...opinion on my paper would be a great help to me in making my paper better. I Like to Write About What Interests Me I am the type of writer who loves to write, but only really likes to write about stuff that interests me. I could write you a good story and my thoughts on running cause that is what I do, and it could be really good. Again you could ask me to write something on let’s say Global Warning and it could be so bad of a paper that nobody would want to read. I have not really written anything outside of my English classes before cause I am not interested in writing for myself. I do not think I am a bad write but I know that I am not a great writer. I love writing journals, and fun short stories. I just hope that taking these English courses will help me improve my writing skills, and to become more aware of what time of paper I am writing.

The Medieval Gothic Cathedral Essay -- European History Architecture E

The Medieval Gothic Cathedral The medieval Gothic cathedral was in many ways a civic building as well as a religious one. This particularly was the case with the famous cathedral Notre-Dame de Chartres (Our Lady of Chartres) in the town of the same name, 80km south-east of Paris, built in the 13th century. Chartres cathedral was planned not only as a place of worship, but also developed as the centre of the town's economy and way of life, as the place that housed the relic of the cloak of the Virgin Mary. The local citizens assisted the building of the cathedral by providing the labour, giving food to the workers and donating money to pay for its construction. The architecture of the cathedral dominated the town in the way that modern skyscrapers are the centre civic buildings today. Many of the decorations in the cathedral such as the thousands of sculptures and beautiful stained glass windows were donated by guilds and tradespeople of the town. People visited Chartres for the fairs held on the feasts of the Vir gin, a major place for trade. Townspeople also used the majestic cathedral and its grounds for business. Medieval cathedrals such as Chartres show the strength and majesty of the Catholic church. The original Romanesque cathedral in Chartres that was built in the eleventh century burned down in a fire in 1134. The cathedral was then rebuilt in the gothic style, but then another fire destroyed all except the towers and the west front in 1194. (See Hallam & Everard 2001) The new Gothic cathedral was regarded as one of the first examples of High Gothic architecture. There was a genuine desire, of course, to build places of worship and prayer and to build a cathedral as a way to pay homage to God. However, the catholic... ...ey, A. 1922, Medieval France A Companion to French Studies, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge UK Von Simpson, O. 1988, The Gothic Cathedral: Origins of Gothic Architecture and the Medieval concept of Order, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey USA Wison, C. 1990, The Gothic Cathedral: The Architecture of the Great Church 1130-1530, Thames and Hudson, Singapore http://art.ranken.edu/borchardt/archistI/Course%20stuff/Medieval/medieval.htm, accessed 13/04/04 Classical Architectural History Lesson, subheading "The New Cathedrals" Halsall, P. 1988, http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/1210chartres.html, accessed 13/04/04 Halsall, P. 1988 http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/1224chartres.html, accessed 13/04/04 Ingersoll, R. 1995, Rice University Cities and History http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~arch343/lecture9.html, accessed 13/04/04

Red Serpent - Fiction :: Papers

Red Serpent - Fiction Something stirred in the gloomy shadows that seemed to lurk everywhere in this town. She reached into her jacket and withdrew a small black pistol. It fitted snugly into her hand and with a feeling of safety, she loaded it. With four quick strides she reached the end of the alley where she looked round and returned the pistol to its holster. The wind howled round the corner, almost knocking her to the floor. In the process she stooped low enough for the light from a nearby streetlight to shine onto her bare left shoulder. Etched into the back of it was a tattoo of an elaborate red serpent. After bracing herself for what was to come, she stepped out into the street. Two shots echoed down the alley and struck the attacker flat in the back of the head. She had dark brown hair, parted only a little enough to let the deadly bullet part her from her existence. The victim did not falter and she did not show any pain from the metal projectile that had shattered her fragile existence. Instead she stood lifeless as though hanging in the balance between what her life had been before and what was inevitably to come. Paul Harris was about six foot three with short cut, blonde hair and eyes that his friends informed him could pierce through anyone he interrogated, something that came in handy in his line of work. "They sure make these simulations realistic, don't they?" "They sure do. I still can't believe they're not real myself and I'm supposed to be running the place!" said Willis, the Armourer. "The director wants to see you right away" Harris followed Willis towards the director's office. "See you next week," said Harris before striding off down the corridor. "I'll be waiting," muttered Willis under his breath as he set off back towards the door that he had come from. "Sit down," ordered the Director. The Director's office was expensively, but sparsely furnished. The

Culture Clashes in Multi-Cultures Essay

In 21st century the most visible fact about society is that they comprise too many types of culture in it together. This is due to the cultural and physical wars which have existed for million years between big communities and also every single little one included in them. This multi-cultural structures societies are usually the return of the colonialism. Big and strong communities having the little and weak ones as colonies enforce them to live with each other who have different types of cultures and traditions. On the other hand multi-cultured societies also are consisting of different types of people who chose to live in the same area because of being suitable for life, having many chances for jobs and prosperious consumption and manifacturing. Sometimes this groups of people adapt to the situation but sometimes they create contrariness and clashes. Kofi Annan, who is the Former Secretary-General of the United Nations uttered that in closly interconnected peoples the inter-cultural dialogue and respect for diversity form the principals of them. His point of view explains that if people strive to understand each other, listen each other and don’t refuse before hearing their beliefs, traditions and protocols, respect other’s thoughts and accept that everyone can have different characteristics and beliefs make closly interconnected groups more comfortable and peaceful. If people don’t obey and accept this respectance then it is definite that clashes will occur in the society. Because human nature is prone to be conqueror in all of the conflicts and struggles. Because we love to win, be justified and prepondarent. When everyone thinks that they are right then a clash occurs because people tend to close their ears to hear all of the other different point of views and thoughts. Because of misunderstandings and dis agreement between the cultures a terrific drama is observed. The political scientist Samuel Huntington thinks that people’s cultural and religious identities will be the primary source of conflict in the post Cold-war world. This shows even the science took culture clashes as a notion and this highlights the severity of it, and what it can bring. In my opinion these clashes are caused by the narrow-minded people. In the past, way before the french and industrial revolution it is so hard to see people who think logically and open-minded. After the efficient developments people changed and improved art, philosophy, psychology and science. Unfortunately these improvements couldn’t and still can’t affect some group of people especially the uneducated population. Because of this group having limited point of view they reject the diversity of people and cultures. And results can be both national and universal. After the struggles between the groups in the same society rebellion can be occur and convulse the government’s discipline. And also because of the idea that wants everyone same as themselves creates the ambition of enforcing other’s to be like them sometimes by wars and sometimes by financial strength. In my opinion the best way to resolve culture clashes is to educate public more and instruct them to be open-minded and respected toward new ideas, beliefs.
